How we help
We offer both financial assistance and general welfare support to people working in the news trade.
One-off welfare grants:
Available to address specific needs for those who have encountered unexpected hardship*. Funding may be approved to help meet essential living costs, replace essential household appliances or disability equipment.
Anxiety Support – Free Helpline 0800 138 6552
Our Anxiety Support Helpline is available, free of charge, to anyone who is struggling to cope with day to day stress and are worried about their mental health. This service is run in partnership with Anxiety UK. Funding for therapy is available for those with more complex needs, but applicants must be willing to disclose financial details to apply.
State Benefit Advice Service
Open to all – anyone can call and ask for advice about state benefits. Our welfare team is trained to advise on all benefits and this includes working age schemes as well as benefits for those facing retirement. We can also advise those who work part time due to caring for children or elderly relatives.
Debt Advice – Confidential Helpline 0800 987 5685
NewstrAid provides a dedicated Debt Advice Helpline, which is open to everyone with a news trade connection. We work in partnership with the Debt Advice Foundation to help people who are worried about loans, credit and debt. A personalised household budget can also be arranged to help people meet repayments and live within their means. We do not clear personal debt but funding may be available for debt solutions put forward by professional advisors.
Information & Signposting
In cases where we cannot help directly, every effort will be made to refer people on to relevant organisations who can offer support.
